The island's southwest coastline, which neighbors the Gulf of Tonkin, is the main area for natural solar salt production. Along the coastline, seawater is solarized on sands or granite reefs. There is no industrial pollution, nor the pollution from big cities and rivers within tens of miles around. 　　　Production process
　　Hainan Island has a long history of salt production, with records that the offshore inhabitants made salt out of seawater by boiling 1,200 years ago. During 1206-1368 AD, sand-solarizing method was introduced from Fujian to Hainan, and gradually developed into the present seawater-solarizing method. That's to say, seawater is introduced into the storage fields when tide flooding, the seawater is naturally evaporated by solar energy in primary, intermediate and senior evaporation ponds for over 10 days and concentrated into 25Be5 saturated bittern, then the saturated bittern is poured into the ceramic crystallizing pond and crystallized into salt by solarization, then the salt is collected, piled up, air-dried, selected, packed and exported.

　　Annual yield of solar salt in Hainan is about 200,000 tons. Salt products mainly include solar fine salt, solar choice salt, solar quality salt, solar natural salt, medium-granule coarse salt, big-granule coarse salt and preserved salt, etc.. Both its physico-chemical indexes (including whiteness, granularity, sodium chloride, water content, water insoluble substance, water soluble impurities) and hygiene indexes (including the contents of heavy metals Pb, As, F and Ba) are up to the national standards of the People's Republic of China. These salt products are not only sold to domestic markets in Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi, but also exported to Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia, etc..
　　The testing results from the Technical Center of Hainan Import and Export Inspection and Quarantine Bureau show that Hainan's solar salt is enriched with necessary trace elements for human body such as Na, Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Zn, Sr, and Se, etc. and that the contents of noxious heavy metals are far lower than the allowable values. Hainan's solar salt can not only be consumed directly, but also be used to make soy sauce, preserve melon, vegetable and seafood. Besides, it can be used for beauty, healthcare and shower sterilization. Hainan inhabitants are noted for their longevity, this is not only attributed to the ecological environment they live in and the water they drink, but also has much to do with the salt they consumed.
